They can keep the “ eral” because there sure wasn’t any “‘fun” in this movie! Hated it from syllable one. Cousin Tyler, DO BETTER!

I saw Michelle Buteau for the first time on The 10,000 Pyramid. Fell. In. Love. Her personality popped out of my tv screen. I’ve been married 37 years to a wonderful woman. I’m 75 so I “ fell in love” with Michelle metaphorically. Once I watched her show on Netflix I became immediately hooked! It is hilarious! So, Survival of The Thickest is my new guilty pleasure. I’ll be introducing my wife to it soon as I can work up the nerve. 😀

I was very touched and inspired by this movie. I wrote about it in an opinion piece in the Houston Chronicle in 2006. I was contrasting The Pursuit of Happyness’s portrayal of a Black man- Chris Gardner- with so many negative portrayals and stereotypes of Black men in movies and media. As a Black man who, as a homeless teenager slept in the bathroom of our local train station, I strongly identified with that scene in the movie. Will Smith deserved an Oscar for portraying Chris Gardner with such deep, heartfelt intensity. Jaden Smith’s Christopher was the perfect complement to his dad. Perfect. I’m watching The Pursuit of Happyness even as I’m writing this. I use the movie to recharge me when I’m feeling down. It’s an inspiration.

I liked this movie. Jacob Kogan as Joshua reminded me of the kid in the original Omen 2. Chilling performance. Flat affect all the way through. Vera Farmiga and Sam Rockwell were adequate as Joshua’s parents but they were sorely lacking in agency against their evil son. Something about a 9 year old smarter than his parents is pretty off putting but add to that the 9 year old’s obvious evilness it’s chilling. The baby’s constant crying was irritating. I almost stopped watching this movie because of it. The problem with having a 9 year old psycho in the house is no one is going to believe the parents when they say he’s a murderer. And Joshua knows it.
