Spoiler free review for all who are considering watching this show and don't want to be spoiled.
A show full of brilliant writing in terms of setting up these intricate mysteries: who are the Others and what exactly do they want? What is the monster terrorizing the survivors of the crash? How is the island able to heal people? What do the numbers mean? All questions that will have you on the edge of your seat, eager to figure out. The character arcs that the show goes through are genius as well, ranging from spinal surgeon that can't accept any less than perfection from himself to a vengeful conman who's spent his life looking for his parents' killer. Lost had some of the best that television has to offer.
Until the writers strike, that is.
After 3 bliss seasons of Lost, the show seemed to lose sight of what it was about and the direction it wanted to take. It introduced many new characters that had next to nothing to do with the overall plot and only seemed to get in the way. Most of the characters had already been fleshed out and expanded upon and it felt dull watching them go about their ways with no more real development out of them. The show became less about the individual characters and more about the overarching plot and mysteries of the island, which I wouldn't have a problem with if they had actually answered the many questions they've been raising since the very first episode. Many plot points had just been abandoned and the entirety of season 6 felt rushed out the door, as if the writers knew how everything would play out but they needed more than just one season to do it all. The specific episode "Across the Sea" has to be the ultimate insult to the intelligence of the viewers, as it supplies answers but in a tone that screams, "well you wanted answers, are you happy now?"
Final thoughts: The first three seasons of Lost will forever have a special place in my heart, as there are few shows that can even compare to the spectacular writing and suspense it displayed. It's just a shame that the same quality of the first three seasons couldn't be carried on to the final three.
