Amazing animation and music. Some of the themes are too in your face especially the allusions. The main character's mental/emotional dilemma was not fleshed out enough for the the climax to make that much sense. There are scenes and plot points that weren't really necessary and didn't affect how the world was built or felt which could have been cut out to no consequence. Some questionable decisions in the flow of the plot and execution of character development. If some of the scenes were cut and some scenes were edited and rearranged then this would have been a legendary movie. Movie is saved by the animation and music. You won't find much else out there like it in terms of that.

I was wondering why people thought this movie was bad, but people who gave this movie a bad score tend to overexaggerate the problems in the movie. I think they were expecting one movie, but got another. They couldn't properly voice this opinion so ended up blaming their dislike of the movie on something else entirely. I'd recommend this movie if you come in with an open mind.

Tone was all over the place. Some good changes from the original Disney version, but many more unnecessary and arguably bad changes.

There are a lot of amazing visuals, and some interesting camera shots, but the visuals did not compensate for the failures in plot rationality, character motivations, and screenplay. There were a lot of moments that I think was supposed to be cool or funny but instead came off as incredibly cringy. 5/10 because the visuals were pretty great.

The writing was extremely bad in dialogue, pacing, plot, and general comprehensive contingency. It seemed as though someone wrote about a dream they had and no one else bothered to proof read the script to make sure everything made sense. Also this movie has almost nothing to do with The Little Mermaid fairytale or little mermaids in general! Did not think movies could have clickbait titles. 2/10
