Putting down Clone Drone in the Danger Zone was the biggest impediment to my review of it. Poor optimization and online play mar what is otherwise a slice 'em up that almost never fails to deliver clean, precise robot murder action. There's plenty of variance in builds to pursue in the game's Endless mode, and Story Mode, while brief, is satisfying to play through. The story itself isn't much to write home about, and I could have done without the transition into an extremely simplified 3D space shooter, but those were minor flaws in an otherwise enjoyable, if simple campaign.
What makes Clone Drone in the Danger Zone worth typing twice is the combat. There's a real urgency in any game with instant death, and CDitDZ is rife with it for you and enemies alike. While you can walk/hobble away after losing a limb to an errant laser sword or hammer blow, your robot body dies if you take any kind of serious damage. Frustratingly, you decide between boosting your character between stages and getting the titular Clones, extra lives allowing you to soldier on.
It's unfortunate I can't say the same for online play. On the Switch, it's borderline unplayable. Other players shimmer in and out of reality ten, twenty frames at a time, hiccupping between attack animations while you stumble forwards. This is consistent between the PvE and PvP modes. If you're lucky, you'll be disconnected at random. Hopefully this will be addressed in an upcoming patch.
