I’m a 90s kid so I remember the original books, TV series, and movie; I have fond memories of the BSC. I expected to hate it, but I ended up binge-watching the whole series and genuinely enjoyed it. I thought it was an engaging Gen Z twist on a classic YA; different, but that’s because today’s kids are different from kids in the 80s and 90s. Not only is the social world different, but kids are far more socially aware and connected than ever before.
I know a lot of reviewers are mad that it talks about things like feminism, LGBT, and even hints at some major social and political concerns (SPOILER: Claudia’s sister indirectly comparing the WW2 Japanese internment camps to what’s been going on with ICE). But like it or not, that’s the reality of today. Kids are very aware of these issues, and they want to be part of this conversation. It makes sense that they would want to include these issues… Gen Z and Gen Alpha will absolutely notice if it’s missing and hate it.
I see no problem with this.
