Vitruvius's De architectura libri decem is the only major work on the architecture of classical Antiquity to have survived. Great significance thus attaches to it and this has been enhanced in the light of history in that the whole literature on architectural theory from the renaissance onwards has been based on Vitruvius or on a dialogue with his ideas.
