Literally breathtaking
It’s incredible how with their 5 main characters this series shows peoples fears and desires: the fear of being the outsider and the desire to rule. Blair has a huge personal growth from the first to the final season, she is able to use all her power in a healthy way by taking over her mother’s brand W, since she has always been the queen B and, as Dan said, a fashion dictator.
Chuck reflects the dark side everybody has but nobody shows. He has a dramatic background and history. However, with Blair as a team and both helping out one another, he also grows up and becomes mature and happy. We learn that he would give up everything for the ones he loves.
Dan, the Lonely Boy, the outsider, falls deeply in love with Serena, the It Girl who everybody notice. Plus the fact that Dan is stunned by all that Upper East Side life, he gets obsessed with finally getting in. Which is controversial because it is mostly seen a weakness and not as just a goal. Gossip Girl shows how, ironically, the It Girl has several unresolved issues and has to face them in order to overcome them. And also the Golden Boy, Nate, who struggles to find happiness turns out to be loyal as a friend, as a boyfriend, as a son, as a person.
We learn life isn’t always as we would want and we can’t control everything. Showing ourselves as perfect individuals gets us nowhere, we have to be ourselves, even with our dark side. We have to live passionately, have a little faith, and if that doesn’t work, a lot of mimosas.
