The paternalism of northern European culture was so stultifying, as to make many females feel like a bird in a cage and engendered a sense of insignificance in them which gave rise to today's Feminism.

One of the better 20th century American novels that I have read.

I thought that she did a remarkable job capturing the complexity, foibles and beneficence of her characters, as well as the apparent contradictions found in their humanity.
