I'd actually give this 4 stars. I just wanted my review to be seen in the filter with the homophobes, conservatives and the 'Christians' - who are (ironically) sick of being preached to. Sure, there are elements of this which are pure Oscar bait, but that's the industry folks. The only part that I didn't love about the film was the end, which seemed a bit rushed as if someone had just noticed the run time of the movie.
I actually saw it twice this weekend as a technical issue at the cinema I was at meant that I missed the last 5 minutes - so I went back on the Sunday. There is a lot to like if you are conscious of the director's craft such as lighting, framing and symbolism. Would whole heartedly recommend, unless you are worried about your feelings being hurt or a mirror being held up in the face of preachy religion - or just hate 'the gays' like you got stuck in 1996 lad culture and never made it out.
