What a beautifully shot film. Every frame is staged and lit perfectly. From a dismal and decaying deathbed scene to the ethereal rolling countryside of Italy, cinematography nerds will find a heap of treats to enjoy here.
This is a romance film first and foremost, however, for the pure horror nuts you will absolutely find some horrific imagery to absorb in this methodically paced and excellently acted indie feature.
Both leads perform exceptionally well with believable chemistry that certainly lends to the illusion of two strangers falling in love despite overwhelming odds with some very natural and believable dialogue to boot. (Despite a few corny lines here and there)
Special effects are brilliant with lots of practical effects for the old purists like myself and some very subtle CGI thrown in for good measure. I think a lot of big budget studios could learn a lot about restraint from a film like this.
Cons include some meandering conversational scenes and some clumsy dialogue here and there but not enough that it would ruin the experience. Also I found the lead character, while expertly acted, leans a little too close to the 'manic pixie dream girl' trope for my liking.
All this wraps up in a very satisfying conclusion that leaves very little room for ambiguity which I personally found refreshing.
Overall a very good indie film with very few minor flaws that should not hurt your enjoyment in the slightest.
Unconventional and quirky. 'Spring' is the feel-good horror to please gore-hounds and doe-eyed romantics alike.
