I just finished the book. I need some time to consider the ending, as it was a great surprise. While I was reading the book, time after time I found myself saying that this is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Not only were the characters interesting and lovable, the writing itself was enchanting. I am sure that the surprise ending will have no great negative impact on my overall very positive feelings.

Should be read by every single person in the world

Very engaging page-turner, many interesting choices, and vivid picture of old time Ireland

Generally speaking, I think the book lacked depth, both in character development and description of the physical surroundings. For example, the dangerous condition of the coal mines is a predominant feature of the story because of its impact on Cilka’ nursing life; But, the author, relying mostly on one incident, provided only a superficial picture of mining environment. Regarding character development, we only know that Alexandr smokes cigarettes and has brown eyes. Given the central role he plays, that seems inadequate.
