I adore the original, my wife adores the original, my 4 year old son adores the original disney movie.
I was interested to see how they would make it their own and I was fairly intrigued by Will Smith being cast.
The movie looks great - the costumes are sensational, the sets are beautiful.
Look closely during A Whole New World and you might see a little Lion King reference, gorgeous.
The dancing really adds a lot of fun and excitement but often its when the singing starts it fails for me.
Will Smith does some great stuff in this movie but for me his worst scene is in the cave of wonder. Probably one of Robins finest. The blue cgi looks wrong, the vocals are robotic pitch shifted and dialogue is like someone sat with the Disney script and changed the odd word here and there (for the worse...)
The dance set pieces are great and when Genie loses his awful blue look the film comes into its own (Who said he had to be blue anyway?....)
The song Prince Ali is my favourite, a fantastic set piece.
In a way maybe if they wanted to distance themselves they could of focused on a non musical movie.
Keep the set dance pieces and focus on the acting.
Theres no doubt its an entertaining film but I did leave thinking I can't wait to watch the aninated version again.
