I'm not a huge Tolkien fan boy that has immersed myself in his world for decades and so I'm looking at this from a pure entertainment perspective. Loved the films which weren't just about spectacle but also managed style, drama, dread and exciting action - particularly the battle scenes and magical powers of some of the protagonists. Most of this series has been a slow burn for me, establishing characters and fairly dull storylines. No large scale battles yet, no displays of massive power, no spectacle other than the breath taking scenery. The Harfoot storyline has been particularly dull. The only bright spark was Adar but even he seems quite tame for the shows hitherto main villain. Blanchett's portrayal of Galadriel as a multi faceted almost demigod in the films still managed to display a likeable side and show kindness and empathy as well as wisdom, her dark side only revealing itself when the ring showed up. This Galadriel is actually quite difficult to like, with Adar actually being a character you can invest in more. By EP7 things seems to start to get going but that's one episode from the season finale. S2 needs to ramp up the action, drama, suspense and more than anything, dread because while the orcs look OK, they are almost comic book characters. In the films we had the Uruks which looked truly formidable and for me, that's the rub. In the fight between darkness and light, the armies of the dark really do need to elicit a sense of fear and dread and so far, Adars army doesn't look formidable, there's no scale to it. It looks more like a small raiding party and he himself also seems pretty affable. It's good to see productions like this and so I'm sticking with it but step it up in S2 guys - you need substance as well as style.
