Something went wrong here. I'd be interested in learning how the game got released in such a blatantly unfinished state. The way story mode rushes the end, several missing modes of play shown in story mode, and outright unfinished textures and objects in the Bowser Highlands course... its honestly kind of crazy.
Speed Golf is an absolute blast, especially with friends or even online (unless you make someone ragequit because if anyone leaves the whole room closes immediately lmao). Don't get me wrong, there is still FUN to be had with this one. But Mario Golf is a big series now and this title does NOT hold up to past titles. Aside from being straight up unfinished, the player lacks a lot of control that we were used to having in previous games. You have almost no ability to move the camera how you want it when preparing your shot. This becomes far more apparent on something like Ridgerock Lake and you are trying to shoot your ball up to a higher plateau - you cant SEE where you're trying to launch your ball and the faded transparent tracer line that shows the path your ball will take does very little in showing you whether or not your ball is going to actually wind up where you want it. Theres a lot more guesswork than theres ever been with this one, and it feels like a lot more randomness.
That said, 'drift' as a mechanic that slightly randomizes your shots is not all that bad. Previous games did this in a slightly different way by randomizing the power of your shot depending on what terrain you were hitting the ball from. This is not as good as it was in past games but it is something you mostly adjust to.
Not much else to say because there isnt much else to play. There are no tournaments, no ring shot, no coin challenge, no birdie challenge, no driving range, no meaningful match play... just regular golf, speed golf, and battle golf (which is basically speed golf in a small area with explosions).
So I'd wait for more content to be patched in, and I'd tell Nintendo this is a miserable trend they better start steering away from. It feels awful buying incomplete games with the promise that it'll be completed later. It was bad when other devs started doing this, but it feels that much worse when Nintendo does it. For a MARIO game, no less. Come on.
