Most people, asked to name "the first sitcom on tv set in a prison", would reply, "Porridge"; this prog aired a full seven years before Ronnie Barker ever told Fulton McKay to "Naff off, McKay!"; it has been largely forgotten by the public, in my view unfairly. It's a fine example of the sort of comedy that Granada made better than anyone else, portraying working class characters with wit and sympathy, the sort of thing that seems to have become unfashionable recently.
