The movie Scott pilgrim vs the world is somewhat of an old damsel in destress movie, this is reinforced by its architypes, in the movie you have all the classics that a damsel in destress movie would have, such as the hero, damsel and the villains. In this essay I would like to address the interesting side of how Scott pilgrim vs the world has flipped the architypes. The film was made in 2010, the genre was a fantasy/action film with the well-known actor Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Flowers) as the protagonists
In this film there are three main architypes, the hero, damsel and villain. Scott pilgrim vs the world has kept these architypes and has let them for fill these rolls such as the damsel being saved by the hero and the hero saving the girl and fighting of the villains and the villains having to stop the hero from reaching the damsel. But if you deconstruct their characters they are not the same type of people who would do this role, for example the hero would fit the damsel role better and the damsel would fit the hero role better. Ramona Flowers shows that she is stronger than Scott and still is objectified as an achievement for him, despite Ramona’s physical capabilities. Whereas Scott has somewhat of an older mind set and feels as though he must protect Ramona when he is just a weak awkward twenty something year old. The villains stick to their role and have the same personalities that your average villain architype would have.
The choice of the stronger female character being stuck in a damsel in destress role is most likely a conscious decision to show that in some cases that no matter the full potential of a women they will not be viewed as strong or worthy but mostly objects. In Scott’s case he may be fighting for her as he may feel weak and wants to redeem himself from his geeky background. This could all be speculation and it may just be an old movie hidden in a modern fissured and have no real view on gender role.
