I reckon this films is a MASSIVE disrespect to the ENTIRE Pokemon franchise. However, before I critique the film, I will say that the CGI of the entire film is executed BEAUTIFULLY. Honestly it's beautiful.
Okay, straight up, what is this quality of acting, like yes I acknowledge that this is a film directed towards a younger audience, however there was a huge difference in the quality of acting from the cast. Ryan Reynold's acting and characterisation of a POKEMON was severely impressive. Pikachu is not a human, so the fact the Reynolds was able to convey the intelligence level of a human, but the characteristics and habits of a pokemon was ASTOUNDING. Justice Smith acting was inconsistent throughout the film, where there were times where he would be able to captivate and move the audience, and times where he just lost that, and was just reciting lines from a script. There was just the emotional disconnection from him and his character, and that showed in the film. Kathryn Newton. Don't get me started on her. I will first and foremost commend her on her efforts, because she seemed to have researched and attempted to characterise her character, however she approached this from a completely angle. She knew Lucy however she wasn't her character. It's like she had an in-between relationship of acquainted-almost-friends with her character if she was real. Newton's acting was shallow and had no depth in exploring the natural flow and beats of Lucy, and was forcing this personality out of her to "act". As soon as she spoke, I felt it was incredibly inauthentic, and that lines were just said with "emotion" (some words had more emphasis than others) instead of thought. She did not know the innerworkings of Lucy, and so was unable to authentically convey her through the screen. Also who the fuck is the actress that was like "we're losing control over the containment chamber" (something along those lines). SHE JUST SAID THAT LINE SO BLANDLY, THERE WAS NO SENSE OF URGENCY IN HER VOICE. SHE WAS SPEAKING AS IF SHE WAS GIVING A LECTURE ON HOW PAINT DRIES.
The storyline of the film was so inconsistent as well, and left the audience puzzled, and not in a good way. A good kind of puzzled is thinking deeper into the world of the film, not trying to piece together what happened because it wasn't well explained enough. When was wheelchair man's son roped up? How did Pikachu get fatally injured by getting hit by a tiny rock? Why was wheelchair man so driven to turn other people into pokemon, if he could just do it to himself?
These aren't good questions, they represent an inconsistent film concept, and if Ryan Reynold's acting and humour wasn't there to save the film, I would've given it a 1 star rating.
