In this story Nature isn't a conscious opponent, but it's clear that Humankind isn't the dominant species in the way we believe ourselves to be. Coach's Hue reminds me a lot of the 1970s blend of science fiction with environmental issues, it finds a way to not be heavy-handed but use this powerful, unstoppable force in a way that would make a horror writer envious: there are more things in heaven and earth than we can understand, and that makes a backdrop for the characters to build, engage, suffer, and transcend. The story was incredibly creative, and I hope this is just the first book from David W. Piazza!
